East precut for the Žilina tunnel

The Žilina two-tube tunnel is part of the D1 motorway, which runs from Bratislava to Košice in eastern Slovakia. In preparation for tunnel driving from the east, the precut for the eastern portal had to be created. Once the tunnel tubes were completed, retaining walls were built and compactly backfilled. Extensive anchors were added and soil nailing had to be completed in order to stabilise the embankment. The nailed areas of the embankment above the retaining wall were sealed with permanent vegetation. The portal walls will be built using gabion supporting structures (cages filled with rocks), and the side walls of the cut will be constructed as tie-back anchored retaining walls.
